limit and asymmetric are in fact both the work of st. petersburg-based producer evgeniy sergeev, who has been building up a library of contemporary d&b productions digitally and now makes the leap to vinyl with some of the strongest of his productions to date. stormy is aptly titled as it rips with ferocity through mangled breaks, rave stabs and hoovers aplenty and quarantine is a quintessential darkside jam with more of that tricksy drum programming. the b-side offers a little more respite with the sunkissed tones of transzendental and the soulful yet ruff mood of jazz is making a smart counterpoint to the heavier a side.

as an artist, o’sullivan has long since explored the juncture between hard-hitting, functional dance floor material and more lofty, conceptual work. from a purely structural standpoint, the artist’s return to avian bears all the hallmarks of previous output under the alias, utilising the same palette found on early ep’s for guy brewer’s label. stripped back and driven, the music marries caustic drum-machine polyrhythms with warping, pitch bent leads and characteristically atmospheric use of reverb. it’s a decidedly dance floor offering, but the music comes refracted through o’sullivan’s own lens, with plenty of elegant references to a career spent exploring much of the techno genre’s periphery, from noise to new wave. crushed vox bubble up from beneath wrought-iron percussion and the artist takes time to step away from high energy 4×4 workouts to explore more complex rhythmic structures and harsh, low tempo grooves.

the sadly departed jaki liebezeit was the kind of drummer whose influence will be continually recognised over the decades to come. best known for his work in can, there are also many more sides to this singular sticksman, and emotional rescue has chosen to shine a light on his post-can period living in stollwerck. on the a side of this 7inch curio is the sound of phantom band with linear johnson & the protons. rush rush has a spiky new wave bent to it, but still liebezeit s drumming stands out. the b side drums off chaos need little explanation its the sound of one of the all-time drumming greats letting rip in a ferocious blast of percussive abandon.

o celebrate the 25th anniversary of ugkãs first album, get on down goes the extra mile, presenting it for the first time ever on vinyl. and 2-lp clear vinyl at that, giving the strutting, funky grooves the chance to really stretch out on your system. back in 1992, southern hip-hop was still proving to the world that it could sustain a fan base that was chiefly raised on rap from new york and la. the geto boys and 2 live crew had made strong cases by the earliest 90s, and pimp c and bun b were ready to make their own. most of the trunk-bumping bass comes from drum programs and basic sampling on these tunes in later years they would build their sound into something even fuller and deeper. self-produced with additional work from houston locals bernie bismark and shetoro henderson, the tracks here are minimal, slow and menacing, which matched their lyrical approach quite nicely. you can hear the beginnings of the groups true greatness in these early lyrical workouts ¹ several taken from the regional cassette-only ep the southern way that got them signed to jive with tales of street hustles, relationships and self-reliance in a world stacked against them. they may have been done early-on, but that doesnt mean they arent crucial to ugks legacy cases in point being the three singles: something good, a charismatic update to bill withers use me up, and pocket full of stones (the latter featured on the menace ii society soundtrack). beyond the singles, deeper cuts like iãm so bad, feels like iãm the one whos doin dope and cramping my style made it clear to the world that this crew had the attitude and charisma to make even bigger waves in the years to come.

a work 12 months in the making, adam beyer continues his exciting series of collaborative eps, teaming up with heavy-hitters pig&dan for an multi-faceted four-tracker. chances are up if you spied adam beyer in an airport departure lounge over the past 12 months, he d have his head buried in his laptop, immersed in creating sound sketches. a long-time fan of collaborations, the drumcode chief has been on an inspiring streak of form lately, teaming up with the likes of mark reeve, dense & pika and now pig&dan. the results have been compelling, to say the least. in trademark perfectionist beyer style, the title track capsule - a shimmering slice of techno - involved -around 15 different versions- the track rigorously road tested by the swede and featured in episodes of drumcode radio to test dancefloor reactions, before finally getting the sign off.

the vision of techno is presented by seven producers from electronic music scene of poland. the well-known artists - blazej malinowski i micha&#322,,,, wolski, who work intensivly over new productions, promote polish scene abroad with liveacts ans dj sets, are resposible for radio broadcasts on which they bring valuable information in relation to electronic music to the listeners. isnt, a very well know female dj and promotor, who has recently started producing hypnotic techno productions. less known, and deeply dark, developing project - the obkt, which is the result of the cooperation of two well-known dark techno producers milena kriegs and eastern renaissance. together with them on the compilation, the lesser-known producers are completing and emphasizing the character of the compilation, nternal bserver (read: internal observer), who has already released several ep’s, and who focuses on playing varied and heavier sound during liveacts. trnah, a female producer with a lot of experience on musical collaborations, who shows with her charming song, that a techno album containing more powerful and hypnotic sound can also be filled with nostalgia and exceptionally captivating sadness.

naibu was given the choice of remixing anything in the none60 back catalogue and chose to remix silent dust’s collaborations with detroit’s selfsays to astounding effect, keeping the hip hop elements of the original and mixing them with his unique drum work and atmospherics. selfsays vocals jump around naibu’s reworkings superbly to create two essential hip hop/drum & bass crossover tracks.
